NEIGHBOURLY folk are being urged to watch out for unscrupulous workmen who targeted an elderly couple from Droitwich Spa.

Police issued the warning after town pensioners were approa-ched by workmen offering to pave drives at their homes.

On the basis of a verbal quotation, the men began work without agreement while the couple were out.

They dig up the drives, carry out part of the job and then demand payment.

If householders refuse to pay up, the builders leave the drive incomplete.

PC Dave Weaver said: "There is nothing to suggest the work will not be completed but clearly there are some very sharp practices taking place and I would ask neighbours to keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable members of the community to ensure they do not become victims of such unscrupulous behaviour."

PC Weaver added: "If you feel intimidated by the situation call the police on 999.

"Genuine tradesmen will be happy to return at a more convenient time, will be happy to undertake work at a suitable time for yourself and will supply written quotations."

Police advise anyone who has doubts about work being carried out to call trading standards on (01905) 765373.
