SHOPPERS want an out-of-town supermarket, according to a parish poll which attracted 11 per cent of Droitwich Spa voters.

Last Thursday, residents were asked if they wanted a supermarket and petrol station built in Kidderminster Road, instead of housing.

The Action for Droitwich (AFD) group called the poll in a bid to get the retail development.

However, plans for 105 homes on the brownfield site are currently lodged with Wychavon District Council.

AFD member Bill Moy said: "It was a fantastic day with a tremendous result."

On Monday night, AFD supporters attended Droitwich Spa Town Council's planning committee meeting.

They called on councillors to take notice and implement the wishes of people who voted in the poll.

Councillors agreed to pass on the representations to Wy-chavon.

Wychavon planning chief Jack Hegarty, said councillors will discuss the planning application for housing on August 30.

Blueprints were deferred in July to allow the applicant to make design improvements.

District councillor Pam Davey (Con, Droit.South) said the low turnout reflected the attitude of Droitwich people towards a "totally unnecessary" poll.

She added: "The process of calling these polls needs examining -- ten people out of about 18,000 should not be able to incur this sort of expenditure."

Cllr Roy Seabourne (Lab, Droit.West) spoke on behalf of fellow Labour councillors.

He said: "We shall call on Wychavon planners to urgently initiate a wide-ranging public debate."

Town centre property owner George Harrison said: "Des-pite calling for the poll and running a vigorous campaign, it's clear AFD members failed to persuade 89 per cent of electorate to support them."
