The Happy Housewife by Heleen Van Royen (Virago, £7.99)
At the age of 31, life is looking good for Lea, the ultimate "lady who lunches" - that is until her husband Harry announces that he wants them to have a baby.
Lea is happily married but, until now, she has never exactly been the domesticated or maternal type.
Nevertheless, Harry gets his way. Once Harry Junior is finally born his mother realises she is supposed to feel something for her son - but she doesn't.
This tale, which is based on Heleen Van Royen's own experiences, also manages to bravely tackle the big issues of birth, death and motherhood.
