MALVERN TOWN 4, WESTFIELDS 2

MALVERN Town registered their third victory in a week defeating Westfields 4-2 in the Banks's Brewery League Premier Division on Saturday at Langland Stadium.

Lowly Westfields had the better of the opening exchanges and Malvern keeper Ross Sanders made a brave save to deny Tony Richards.

It was no real surprise when Richards gave the visitors a 15th minute lead after being sent clear by Robbie Weaver.

Westfields continued to press a hesitant Town, but gradually Malvern hauled themselves back into the game and equalised in the 32nd minute when Andy Shepherd scored from close range following excellent work by Paul Ashby.

The second period started pretty much as the first, with Derek Craddock missing a good chance for Westfields after being sent clear.

But Malvern then took control with three goals in a ten minute spell.

In the 60th minute Dean Whittal-Williams set up Joe Maidment whose fierce 20 yard drive went in off the inside of the post.

Shepherd put his side 3-1 up three minutes later with his second goal and fifth in four games since rejoining the club.

In the 70th minute Paul Ashby, who had an excellent game, scored his first goal for the club when he found himself with time and space to score his side's fourth and final goal.

Westfields did not throw the towel in and scored their second goal when Richards headed home in the 85th minute.

But Malvern comfortably held on to complete a league 'double' after winning the first meeting 6-1.

The previous Thursday Malvern Town beat Kings Norton Town 2-1 in the Worcester Senior Urn. Trailing 1-0 at the interval, Malvern equalised on the hour through John Wade and grabbed the winner in the 80th minute when Dean Whittal-Williams converted a cross from Rob Bastock.
