THE region's hi-tech industry has been under the spotlight with a visit from West Midlands MEP, Malcolm Harbour.

Mr Harbour is one of the leading MEPs in the field of electronic commerce and high technology and was here to visit three businesses at the cutting edge of new technologies.

The tour began at Yamazaki Machine Tools, in Worcester, one of the leading producers of high-technology, manufacturing tools.

Mr Harbour was then due to go to Malvern Business Park to see Retail Futures, a pioneer in British e-retailing.

The visit was to conclude with a briefing on the future plans of QinetiQ, the recently privatised former DERA.

"As a West Midlands MEP, Mr Harbour takes a particular interest in the Technology Strategy for the region and is looking forward to hearing the views of Worcestershire businessmen and women on the proposed hi-tech corridor planned for the M5 from Malvern to Birmingham," said a spokesman.

Mr Harbour has been "heavily involved" in the new EU rules governing e-commerce, in his role as Conservative European spokesman.
