"ENGLAND has reached the depths of degradation" - that was the grim message delivered by Lady Monckton and recorded in the Malvern Gazette in 1951.

The wife of MP Sir Walter Monckton was speaking at a fete organised by the Upton-upon-Severn branch of the Conservatives.

Referring to events in Persia and Egypt, she said we were being "kicked around by everyone" and blamed the way "the present Government has handled our foreign affairs".

She said the Tories had the advantage of being united under strong leadership - Mr Churchill, Mr Eden, Lord Salisbury - while Labour were split over "the most important issue of all", re-armament.

Her sentiments were echoed by South Worcestershire MP Mr De la Bere, who thundered: "You will never get the cost of living down as long as the Socialist party are returned to power. You must get rid of them lock, stock and barrel."
