n THE heart of our ancient city and its character are being destroyed by our city fathers who are allowing supermarkets to be built around the place.

It is criminal to see these monstrosities being erected on such a grand scale because they outshine and overwhelm everything else in sight - the approach roads to the city, the fields, the greenery, absolutely everything.

Meanwhile the old buildings, the churches and the little shops are neglected and lay derelict (not a happy sight for a tourist).

This historic town of ours once had a buzz about it - now it is dead.

What a sad reflection on those responsible for the inheritance they are supposed to protect for our children and for future generations.

They should be asked of themselves, for taking the vision of the way ahead.

Over recent years, I have travelled to California, Nevada, and New York City.

Nowhere, in any of those states, have I seen supermarkets on such a big and grand scale like we have.

I have seen shopping outlets and warehouses and I have seen small shops together with their owners alongside big stores in NYC.

I have also seen lots of farmers markets. But no eyesores of supermarkets like over here.

Can anyone explain to me, why do we need to have the stores so big?

Would not ones half their size built within the city boundaries suffice? These would be more in keeping and not so ugly.
