AN estate could have its streets "reclaimed" for non-motorists if a bid for inclusion in a new Government initiative is successful.

The area around Duke of Edinburgh Way, in Malvern Link, could become one of three "home zones" to be introduced in Worcestershire, if the joint County and Malvern Hills District bid impresses.

Benches, new road surfaces, flower beds, trees and play areas would be introduced together with parking and traffic management measures. The idea behind the zones is to make them more amenable to people rather than vehicles.

Highways Partnership manager Mike Davis explained: "At the moment, most residential streets are just designed for cars and anyone else using them feels they are impinging on motorists' space.

"The idea of these schemes is not to stop cars using these roads, but to make motorists feel as though they shouldn't really be driving down them, as though they are out of place. The streets in the centre of Worcester are a good example."

In order for the bid to be successful the support of local residents is vital as the Highways Partnership has to demonstrate strong local support and enthusiasm for the plan to win the backing of the county council.

The partnership has sent letters to all the residents of the estate, asking them for opinions and suggestions.

Residents have so far voiced their support for the plan. Eric Bridges, 75, of Duke of Edinburgh Way, said: "Cars do come down here too fast and we've been complaining for ages to the police to do something about it.

"There are also far too many cars parking along the side of the road. The residents who live that side can't have driveways because the bank that runs up to their houses from the road is too steep.

"Having so many cars parked together is dangerous. Kids run out into the road from between them.

"I would welcome anything that lowers the speed that traffic comes through here at. What I would like to see is some proper speed bumps installed."

The bid will go to the county council today (Friday) but Mr Davis still wants to hear opinions and suggestions from local residents as to how they would like to see it take shape. He can be contacted at the Highways Partnership Unit, Hatherton Lodge, Avenue Road Malvern, WR14 3AG.
