COLWALL'S hopes of a Lords final are over for another year after championship holders Elvaston's comprehensive bowling performance overwhelmed the home side at Stowe Lane on Sunday.

WADWORTH 6X NATIONAL VILLAGE KNOCKOUT

Quarter-final

COLWALL v ELVASTON

In their biggest game in the competition for a few years and in front of a crowd of several hundred, Colwall won the toss and chose to field on a soft wicket that looked to favour the bowling side.

This however didn't stop Elvaston opening batsman Lee Archer and Richard Johnson quickly establishing a four an over run rate before the former fell bowled to Damien Berry in the seventh over.

Paul Birch next added 29 before skying the ball into keeper Steve Ferguson's gloves off Stuart Bailey and it needed a fine individual performance from skipper Johnson to see Elvaston score a competitive total.

His innings of 87 was the highlight of a total of 201-6 for the visitors after Dave Sutton (2-41 off 9) and Jordan Kontarines (1-28) had both bowled well before a late surge from the middle order scored 40 runs in the last five overs including three sixes.

Colwall's batting performance can only be described as very disappointing as a superb display by Elvaston's bowlers reduced Colwall to only 37 runs and gave the two time winners of the competition an emphatic 164 run victory.

The downfall was started by Andy Barrett's three wickets in three overs which led Colwall into a position they could never recover from.

Tom Wolfendale and Barney Bamford both fell in the first over to Barrett and with Tim Riley following soon after it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the home side.

Further excellent spells of bowling from Murray (2-3) and Birch (3-4) condemned Colwall to a heavy defeat, with Richard Williams the only batsman to reach double figures.

A disappointing conclusion then to an exciting run in the Wadworth 6X Village Knockout this year.

Colwall's weekend was also setback by the weather as only 17overs were possible in the league game against Dumbleton on Saturday.

Will Hards had started well for Colwall collecting three wickets for 35 before heavy rain cancelled out Dumbleton's score of 78-3.
