COMBINING mountain climbing and a lifelong ambition with fundraising for his local church, Bert Moffat, of the parish of Corse, climbed the four highest mountains in Great Britain, Scafell Pike in England, Snowdonia in Wales, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Carraun-toohill in Ireland.

Sharing his enthusiasm was his climbing companion Jean Cresswell who scaled each of the mountains with him.

They found the last climb quite tough, which included a steep climb of 3,400 feet in about three-quarters of a mile, encountering the Devils Staircase, a gully between two mountains.

With a temperature of 87 degrees, it was the hottest day of the year as they encountered and crossed rivers and streams.

The mountain top was rocky but it was very clear and they met a party of Japanese climbers at the top.

Bert, who was born in Ireland, was able to take the opportunity of meeting up with his brother whilst there.

All the money raised from sponsoring Bert will go to Corse Parish church. Sponsor forms are still out, so there is still time to sponsor Bert by ringing Jill Bates (840015) or Lucy Houdley (700324).

Winners in the Corse and Staunton Village Hall "100 Club" monthly draw, which took place at the Bowls Club, for July were 1 Mrs Margaret Houldey, 2 Mr S. Turrier, 3 Mr B. Penfold, 4 Mr I. Fardon.

At long last the young people of Corse and Staunton have the opportunity to join their own youth club in the villages. Something like 14 years has passed since the closure of the last club, which was run by Mr Tony Fardon and others, and it is very pleasing to know that a group of people have formed a committee and the first stages of starting the club has begun. The first meeting will be on Friday, September 7 and there will be two age groups; the seven to 11-year-olds will meet in the village hall from 6.30pm to 8pm and the older group, from 11 to 16 years, meets from 8pm to 9.30pm.

We wish them every success in this new start.
