A DETERMINED adventurer will soon embark on his dream journey overland to South Africa for charity.

Lance Warwicker will brave deserts and tropical rainforests when he travels for nine months to raise money and gather equipment and supplies for African-based charities.

The 36-year-old will be taking a small team of people and two Toyotas through Europe, Morocco, the western Sahara and down to Cape Town.

"It's been a dream, something I've wanted to do for 15 years. We will be taking various equipment, irrigation pumps, medical supplies and a small generator for small villages en route."

Mr Warwicker, who has called his expedition Trans-Africa, organised it with team member Alan Tonks.

He said the main charity he wanted to help was Landmine Action and hopes to raise money for it through charity events.

"A number of the countries we will be visiting have serious landmine problems," he said.

"There is a real danger we may come across areas that will be landmined. We will be getting by on local knowledge."

Mr Warwicker from Calves Mead, Tenbury Wells, said he would take a laptop and digital video camera on the trip, so that schools in South Africa and the UK could communicate with each other.

"We are desperate for a sponsor for a satellite phone for the communication link", said Mr Warwicker, a care worker.

"We are also looking for support for the project in the form of sponsorship.

"Any company sponsoring Trans-Africa will have the opportunity to display logos on vehicles, equipment and clothing."

Mr Warwicker, who starts his journey early next month, said the temperatures could reach 45C.
