A CHORUS of disapproval echoed around the Guildhall last night when city councillors were asked to consider extending Hallow Road waste tip.

West Mercia Waste Management's application to widen access and bring in seven-day opening received an overwhelming thumbs down at yesterday's planning committee meeting.

And Lindsay Heason, on behalf of Riverview Residents Association, called for the proposal to be thrown out and insisted on total closure.

"With the changes, there would be more danger to residents and road users, and congestion," she said.

"The compactors and shredders would be larger and heavier causing more stress-related illness.

"With noise and fumes, 26 homes would be unable to use their gardens or leave windows open. There would be no respite, even on Sundays.

"It has been 32 years since the site was first used for waste and it is time it stopped."

Councillor Aubrey Tarbuck said members were responsible for finding another site.

"It used to be a beautiful area," he said. "Chapter Meadows is nothing compared with what was there."

"We should tell members to tell County Hall we do not want to continue for the sake of residents. It has been a decade longer than initially intended."

Councillor Richard Udall said it was a popular site.

"But if we were considering it for the first time, there wouldn't be a tip there," he said.

"Transportation concerns of residents are my main reason for objection."

Councillor Denham said it was a dilemma for the city and contractors.

"I have had calls for more recycling facilities to be open on Sundays," he said.

"People are realising the impact on future generations. But this isn't the right place for it."

Mark Middleton recommended the county council be advised to turn down the application. Councillors unanimously agreed to recommend refusal to the county council.
