AN "unprovoked" assault on an 21-year-old Asian man led to an angry stand-off in a Worcester street.

Witnesses say the man was left with blood pouring from his mouth after he was punched by a man in Dent Close, off Wyld's Lane, on Tuesday evening.

He fell across the bonnet of a car before walking away with his friend towards Wyld's Lane.

Moments later, a group of Asians arrived in a car and rounded on the attacker, who was accompanied by a woman and a dog.

Richard Smith, aged 20, who saw the attack yards from his home, said there was no apparent reason for it.

"The couple had just come out of the house next to me and were walking across the grass when they saw this Asian lad and his friend," he said.

"There was a lot of bad language and it sounded like he was just mouthing off at the Asian lad.

"This bloke in the baseball cap smacked him right in the mouth and he fell on the car bonnet. His mouth was just bust open."

Mr Smith said the two Asian teenagers left Dent Close, before a car full of Asian men arrived and confronted the attacker.

"One of them was saying something like 'Why don't you pick on someone your own size, like me?' and then tried to swing a right hook at him."

After witnesses split the two factions apart, the man, described by Mr Smith as around 6ft and slim, and the woman, around 5ft and with blonde hair, fled towards Vincent Road.

"It's hard to say if it was six-of-one and half-a-dozen of the other, but the bloke with the baseball cap could have walked away but he didn't, he kept on at him," said Mr Smith's friend Gavin Ratcliffe, 23.

Although witnesses say only two people with a black and white dog were involved, police are looking for four men and a woman.

Vicki Davies, of Worcester police, said the victim, who has not been identified, did not need hospital treatment.
