BEFORE I left Worcester more than five years ago to work in Europe, I often used to visit Worcester Library.

At that time, the Library was not heavily used and the people that used them were either "academics" or those who were of retiring age.

How life in Worcester has changed in five years. Now both the Worcester Library in Foregate Street and Worcestershire Library in Trinity Street are full of people from all ages and all backgrounds.

This is due to how successful these libraries have been in offering a wide variety of services to attract so many different types of people.

There was a time when funding for libraries was under threat, particularly when Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Party was in power during the 1980s.

Looking around and seeing how well-used Worcester libraries are, I am grateful that in recent times, local and national governments have put in the money to provide the good public services Worcester now seems to provide. Well done.
