IN reply to John Hinton (You Say, July 5), while again showing undying support for the present Ministry of Defence, he still fails to acknowledge the number of ships and submarines laid up for uncompleted repairs.
This is mainly through lack of funding. We do have ships unable to go to sea due to lack of fuel, and do have ships and submarines unable to exercise due to lack of ammunition.
Of course, the Type 23 Duke class frigates operating in the Gulf are ships designed for colder climates, meaning crews having to suffer temperatures below decks of up to 45C.
They're good ships, but in the wrong location due to a shortage of vessels that are seaworthy.
BRIAN HUNT,
Worcester.
