A TRY double from winger Nick Baxter gave Worcester Rugby Club a desperately needed 22-12 victory at Waterloo on Saturday.

With Leeds' game against Coventry postponed due to the Midlanders suffering from flu, Worcester's win could have taken them back to the top of Premiership Two.

But the enormity of Worcester's task was underlined by in-form Rotherham's stunning 34-0 success at Exeter which keeps them top.

Worcester never looked likely to rattle up the big score their points difference will need if they are to pip Leeds and Rotherham to the title.

Waterloo matched them with two tries of their own and but for some wayward kicking they could really have put the visitors under pressure.

"We did the job and we've now got to the end of a stiff section of games and we must learn from our experience," said Director of Player Management Phil Maynard.

"We've never been to Waterloo and won before and it's a difficult place to play. We might have put 78 points on them at our place but this is a funny league.

"The lads now need to take a long look at themselves and have got to say to themselves that we need to win nine out of our remaining nine games to keep our credibility.

"It's a difficult problem to get them motivated when we've already beaten Waterloo by such a big score at Sixways.

"But you can see by the results any team in this league is capable of putting in a good one-off performance and the learning curve is pretty steep.

Defence

"Every team also builds their game on defence and side which wins a game is not the side which goes looking for victory, but the one which defends better.

"We've still only conceded two tries in the last four games and although we're disappointed someone has scored against us we're happy with the two points."

Try-scorer Baxter found himself dropped last month when Worcester travelled to Leeds but his double on Saturday saw him elevated to the top of the try scoring charts with nine for the season.

"It's nice to be scoring tries but it's not a case of coming back to form," he said.

"I had two chances and scored two tries, but it was a stop-start game and hard to get a good platform."

Tony Yapp kicked the rest of Worcester's points with four penalties. They now have a three-week break before hosting West Hartlepool and Wakefield.
