THERE are steady eddies and flamboyant mavericks and Ben Harvey is certainly the latter.

With just six months experience at stand-off he is not a safe pair of hands who has seen it all before.

But the 25-year-old former Richmond scrum-half brings an attacking zest to the Worcester back line and has the unpredictability to unlock defences.

And now, after making his league debut as a stand-off at West Hartlepool in October, Harvey has settled into his new position to emerge as an alternative to Tony Yapp -- the league's top scorer and automatic first choice at the start of the season.

"I feel like a stand-off now and I enjoy it," said Harvey, the nephew of actress Jan Harvey.

"I've done a lot of work in training and spoken to Tony Yapp which has been a lot of help and I'm more comfortable here. But I would go back if I was asked, if someone wanted me to play at scrum-half again I would."

Harvey had a dramatic impact after appearing in the second-half against Exeter and kept his place for the victory the following week against London Welsh.

He has a taste for the unexpected with both his passing and kicking which can be exciting but also nerve jangling for Worcester's coaches and supporters.

"That's just the way I like to play the game," he added. "But now I've had a few games as a number ten I've spoken to Geoff Cooke, Les Cusworth and Phil Maynard and learnt that I've got to control the game."

And alongside the responsibility of being the side's playmaker, Harvey also found himself wearing the captain's armband for the last 20 minutes of the London Welsh game.

"It's a nice responsibility and always a nice honour to captain the club but at number ten it's not that different to be captain as you're already expected to take control."

Next up comes perhaps the biggest test -- a visit to Rotherham.

The stakes will be high, but Harvey said he will not curb his attacking instincts if selected.

"I wouldn't change the way we've got to play, we need to play in their half as much as possible," he said.

"We'll play effective rugby and make sure we're comfortable with it."
