WINGER Mat Walker believes Worcester can do what no club has managed for three seasons, beat Rotherham at Clifton Lane.

The 21-year-old winger moved to Sixways from Rotherham in the summer so knows the vagaries of the ground where the Yorkshiremen have become virtually unbeatable.

Rotherham's last league defeat was against Newcastle back in April, 1997, so the odds are stacked against Worcester keeping alive their faint promotion hopes.

A Worcester victory would leave them just two points behind the Premiership Two league leaders but defeat would open up a six-point gap with only four games to play.

Rarely

"It's just a very hostile place to play. Rotherham have played there for years and years and have mastered playing in the conditions," said Walker.

"It's a small pitch, they rarely kick into touch and they know the width of the pitch, they just play it very well.

"New sides to the ground know they're facing a tough side and they walk up and see the pitch to the right and they don't know if it's a training pitch.

"When they find out that it's the match one, they don't want to get involved. Because of this the pitch wins Rotherham so many games."

Last season Walker was part of Rotherham's agonising play-off defeat on tries scored to Bedford. A defeat for Worcester will see him missing out again.

"Even if Rotherham go up instead of Worcester I wouldn't regret moving," he said.

"I've enjoyed it here and if you think like that you're never going to progress and become the player you set out to be."
