WORCESTER Rugby Club's influence in the sport has been boosted by chairman Cecil Duckworth being elected as chairman of English Second Division Rugby (ESDR).

Duckworth was voted into the post at ESDR's annual meeting at the Worcester club's Sixways headquarters yesterday.

The two-and-a-half hour meeting also discussed the controversial issue of promotion and how second division rugby can get a bigger slice of the Rugby Football Union's money.

"Promotion and relegation is the number one issue and is backed by everyone but finance is also a central issue," said Duckworth.

"We want to make sure the top division doesn't take all the cream, money is being generated but there's a huge disparity between the top division and the rest of rugby."

London Welsh have also confirmed they will be playing in the Welsh leagues next season so ESDR voted that Rugby Lions will take up the vacant position.

Rugby were due to be relegated after finishing bottom but one last season.
