WE all pride ourselves on our honesty at Worcester in the way we look at our performances.

Even though we beat Manchester comfortably at the weekend, there were many aspects of our play that need tightening up before we go head to head with Leeds on April 1.

Anyone who witnessed the display at Sixways on Saturday will know exactly what I am talking about and the players have agreed that we need to go up another gear if we are to compete in Yorkshire.

It was a pretty solid first half where we scored three tries and at times we looked dangerous. The teamtalk at half time was pretty much: "same again and let the ball do the work." Basically, carry on where you left off but try to move the ball as much as possible. I said the same thing when we were leading Otley 37-3 at half-time. Once again though, I didn't get the best response. The players started to do things differently and rather than keep it the same and move the ball, they got a bit selfish with the play. It was a huge let-down and although we scored another two tries to bag the bonus point, the performance just wasn't good enough for a professional side. It might sound strange, when you think that we've lost at Moseley this season, but after the final whistle on Saturday - it was the worst I have ever felt after a match. I thought we didn't show the game enough respect and we just played a very naive second half. If we had played to our game-plan then we would have put 50-odd points on the board and sent out a clear message of intent.

I keep on saying it, but we need to play an 80-minute, structured game and we will hit teams for six. Leeds are doing that. They are relentless with how they play and they continue to do the things that are working for them. They do not over-elaborate, they continue with the plays they know will bring tries. That is what we have to do. People say to me it is results that count and I take their point. However, I am interested in performance. You have to know where you are going and what standards of play to set. I have very high standards and want those to rub off on not just the senior players but also the younger ones too. People may look at the scoreline and think everything is OK. However, you cannot just pat yourself on the back for yesterday's work because then you stand still - you stop developing. We have to look at performances and results. I am not talking about playing fancy rugby which is just pleasing to the eye. We must play effective rugby which puts points on the board. The frustrating thing for me sometimes is that I know we are capable of so much more because I see it on the training pitch week in, week out. We have some very talented players here at Worcester. There seems to be an attitude among the rugby world that Leeds are superior. I would certainly say that they must start as favourites at Headingley but I think we will give them a good game.

I thought Sateki Tuipulotu went very well in his old position at full-back and that has certainly given me another option for Leeds. He scored a hat-trick of tries and could have had a fourth. It was just a pity he had an off day with the boot! Seriously though, Teki was very impressive and I was very pleased with him as I was Spencer Bromley and Nick Baxter on the two wings.

On the injury front, Tony Windo had to come off in the first half because he had trouble breathing and then had an asthma attack. He will obviously be fine for next week. Dave Sims also came off injured with a shoulder problem but will be OK for Leeds. Scott Barrow and Andrew Lamerton are also back in full training and will be available for squad selection. Earl Va'a is also gradually returning to full fitness and should be in the picture.

Leeds is such a big game for us that, despite us having a 'free' weekend, we will all be working and getting ourselves focussed and prepared for our roles in that match. Every player will obviously have a very important part to play and what I can assure all our supporters is that the side will be 100 per cent prepared for battle.
