SECOND just won't be good enough for one of Worcester's summer recruits Nick Broughton.

The back row forward wants nothing less than promotion and the Premiership Two trophy.

And the desire for success has been fired by the disappointment of being part of the Bedford squad relegated through last season's play-offs.

"It hurt just as much as you would expect but to be fair we lost the fight a lot earlier than that for a combination of reasons," he said.

"There were at least half a dozen games we should have won in the league including Harlequins home and away and Bath home and away.

"It was hard to take and we should have got ourselves off the bottom of the league.

"Rotherham were very well organised and very passionate and although there was not I'm sure they'll give plenty of sides in division one some hard games, especially at home."

Broughton's arrival at Worcester has been via a more unusual route than most travelling from New Zealand to England as a Celtic Kiwi.

He played for New Zealand at U19s and had trials at U21s before deciding to develop his international career with Scotland.

Time spent with Melrose and Edinburgh Reivers saw him gain caps with Scotland Sevens but he then moved south to play for Bedford - a club he still has fond feelings towards.

"Bedford are very ambitious and they have loyal supporters but on the financial side they've had to adjust to not getting as much money.

"But they've still got a good squad together and although I've not been coached by Colin Jackson I wish them well apart from when they play us."

The 27-year-old signed the day before the squad returned for pre-season training so knows much less about Worcester than most of the new faces.

One thing is for sure though - he knows what he wants during his time at Sixways.

"All I really know is that they've gone close but fallen at the final hurdle so we'll be making sure that doesn't happen this year," he added.

"Second best just isn't good enough, we've got to be to make sure we can gain promotion."
