WORCESTER Rugby Club sailed to the top of an embryonic league table with a 73-0 demolition of Rugby Lions.

In an embarrassingly one-sided affair they scored eleven tries while the visitors only managed a single penalty attempt from the half-way line.

Worcester's forwards completely dominated in all areas and scored six of the side's tries, including five directly from line-outs close to Rugby's line.

But on the day Worcester opened their new south stand to the public, they rose to the top of Allied Dunbar Premiership Two on points difference.

"We've seen the difference in the quality between professionals and amateurs struggling to survive under financial constraints," said director of rugby Les Cusworth.

"The lads have trained extremely hard and we've put together a side that will dominate most teams at this level. We now need to introduce width and expansion to our game and we've seen evidence of that today.

"It was a game that had to be won and the lads are very hard on themselves as we've got bigger tests to come."

Worcester's huge margin of victory came as no surprise but the decision to switch record try scorer Nick Baxter to the right wing was a first.

"The back row moves go left to right and Nick doesn't have to do as much defending on the right," added Cusworth.

"Nick hasn't had too much possession lately and Matt Walker is used to playing left wing so we feel the side is now better balanced."

Neither wingers got on the score sheet against Rugby but 18-year-old centre Andrew Higgins broke his duck with two explosive efforts.

"I don't feel it's a relief as I don't judge my performances by how many tries I score," he said. "I'm really happy since I joined Worcester and things are starting to gel as I get to know the players."
