ALLY McLean is hoping Sunday's clash with Otley kick-starts his Worcester Rugby Club career after a few stalls since his summer move from Bedford.

The flying Scotsman makes only his second start in a Gold'n'Blue jersey in the National Division One encounter and believes he is in pole position to make a big impression at the weekend.

The 24-year-old has endured a frustrating time this season so far with only one start at Manchester to show for his efforts.

He has seen Spencer Bromley and Nick Baxter consistently block his way to the winger's shirt so far but intends to grab his opportunity with both hands after taking the number 11 shirt away from Bromley.

He said: "It is a big squad here at Worcester and we all have to be patient and wait for our chance. I came on against Saracens last week and did quite well so I am delighted to be in against Otley.

"Sometimes when you train hard all week and try to impress you do not even get in the final match squad. That can be quite disconcerting but you cannot argue when the team is winning every week.

Determined

"It is just up to the players to take their chance when they get into the team and I am determined to do that on Sunday."

And despite the 42-13 defeat in Tetley's Bitter Cup fifth round at Vicarage Road on Sunday - Worcester's first of the season - McLean said confidence had not suffered too much.

He added: "We lost the game but everyone is well aware what a class act Saracens are. The match was a bit of a shock to the system because of the pace it was played at but you have to put the defeat into perspective - they are the best team in the Premiership.

"The defeat dented confidence a little but I think everyone is looking forward to Otley on Sunday."

Otley, who won promotion to Division One last season with Birmingham and Solihull, visit Sixways with the worst defensive record in the league and were thrashed 83-11 by Leicester two weeks ago in the fourth round of Tetley's Bitter Cup.

And McLean for one, is already licking his lips at the prospect of taking them on.

"I would love to score a couple of tries but then so would everyone else!" he added.
