A FOOTBALL tournament and disco is being organised in aid of a sports fund being set up in memory of a player who died during a routine operation.

Stuart Thompson died from a rare condition hat affects just one in 30,000 people.

The 28-year-old had a cardiac arrest triggered by a reaction to anaesthetic while he was being operated on for an appendix problem in April.

The dad-of-one, whose "soulmate" Andrea is expecting their second child in September, played for the Turk's Head pub, in Worcester Road, Bromsgrove.

His grieving family set up a memorial fund to help sportsmen and women.

Three members of the pub football team have now organised the charity event on Saturday, July 7 to raise cash.

The eight-team contest kicks off at 10.30am on the playing fields at the back of United Engineering Forgings in Aston Fields. The semi-final and final will be played the following day.

On Saturday night there will be a disco and barbecue at Garrington's Sports and Social Club, in Newton Road, from 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £3.

Mr Thompson's mum, Sue said she had put off her holiday so the family could attend.

"The lads have organised this themselves and it is wonderful," she said.

" I hope everyone supports them. It's a nice way to remember Stuart."

Tickets are available from the Turks Head or from Mark Burford on 01527 875113.

If you would like to organise an event in aid of the fund, write to Sue Thompson at PO Box 6162, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, B61 7BR.
