BEWDLEY people whose lives were blighted by last year's flooding devastation will be able to see a range of flood defence systems demonstrated around the town on Saturday.

The town is hosting the country's first ever flood defence trade fair, which will give townsfolk the chance to compare products on offer from about 20 firms.

The day has been arranged by Bewdley Residents Flood Committee, which was formed in the aftermath of the worst floods in the town for 50 years last autumn.

Chairman Peter Barnett said: "It is now acknowledged by all that the current methods of protecting individual properties from flooding, geared as they are around the provision of sandbags, are outmoded and ineffective."

A £2 million Environment Agency scheme to erect removable steel flood barriers alongside Severnside North and South is due to go before planners, although the first phase is not likely to be complete before September 2002.

More information on the trade fair is available from organiser Gill Holland on 01299 403055.
