JEFFREY Holmes is probably young and healthy (You Say, June 15), but when he is old and frail and aware of death, he might not despise religion so much.

None of us is long on this earth - and then what? If death is the end of everything, I'm beggared if I can see much point in being born in the first place.

Like Mr Holmes, I dislike many aspect of organised, churchy religion, but Christ's teachings of compassion and self-denial are what keep me going from day-to-day.

I don't always live up to it, none of us do, but it is a constant uplifting I deal to strive for - with God's help.
