A RADIO station aimed specifically at the region's over 50s is being launched by the brain behind 70s slapstick Saturday morning show TISWAS.

Peter Tomlinson, who co-presented the programme with Chris Tarrant until 1977, has vowed that Saga 105.7 FM will be radio heaven for West Midlands' "older" generation.

The 58-year-old, who lives near Ombersley, said since winning the franchise back in March, he had been busy researching for the station's October launch.

"The type of music we will be playing will range from the 1940s to the 1990s," he said.

"We have 5,000 tracks to choose from as people of my age have a catholic taste.

"I was brought up by parents who played music on the piano but also like proper rock 'n' roll such as Bill Haley."

Mr Tomlinson said Saga would feature 60 per cent music and 40 per cent speech.

"This will be intelligent radio with proper conversation," he said.

"Just because you've reached 50 it doesn't mean all you are interested in is health and finance.

"We're fit, able and active and this station will be dynamic and stimulating."

The Bristol-born managing director of Ombersley's JTA communications company, said that as the West Midlands was the second largest region in the country, there were 3.4 million potential listeners.

"I believe we're the pioneers of this kind of project," he said.

"I'm currently choosing presenters, a programme controller, and head of sales, who will be announced soon."

Birmingham-based Quantum PR has been appointed to launch the station after a three-way competitive pitch from two other leading agencies.

"They have an understanding of the regional cultural mix and broadcast PR experience," said Mr Tomlinson.

Anne Parry, deputy managing director of Quantum PR said the addition was a terrific fillip for the team."

"We're extremely excited about our role in the launch of Saga 105.7 FM in the region," she said.
