SOLDIERS returning from the war in South Africa were given a hero's welcome by Malvern people 100 years ago.
Corporal Houghton and Privates Lewis, Hall and McPherson, of the local rifle corps, were greeted by a large crowd at Great Malvern station.
"The enthusiasm with which the men were received was of the heartiest description and reminded one of the demonstrations in the spring of last year which marked the series of British triumphs over the Boers," noted the Malvern Gazette.
Riflemen, artillery volunteers, the town band and the fire brigade were on hand to welcome the returning soldiers who, "tanned almost to the colour of their clothing", were taken by carriage to the town centre.
