MALVERN Link station is in line for improvements in a countywide scheme by Worcestershire County Council.

The council is in talks with Central Trains to improve aspects of the building relating to transport links, as part of an interchange improvement programme across the county.

The land on which the station is built is owned by Railtrack and is leased by Central Trains. Around £270,000 was spent on the station at the beginning of last year improving lighting, repairing and redecorating the bridge and resurfacing the platforms and car park.

The latest plans will improve the areas surrounding the station and provide better access to all forms of transport. Among the ideas being discussed are improvements to the car park to provide extra spaces, improvements to the entrance for pedestrians, better cycle facilities, disabled facilities on platform two and better bus access.

Sarah Gilmore, principal engineer at the county council, said that plans were only in their very early stages.

"Nothing is decided as yet, everything is still at the feasibility stage," she said.

"We're looking at all possible options.

"Work does need doing on the station, the old pillars and lamps at the current pedestrian entrance are falling into disrepair.

"We're looking at pedestrian links to the station, how people get there, with a view to things such as crossing facilities, to improve access. Access for the disabled on platform two is non existent at the moment, so that's something else we are considering."

Ms Gilmore also made reference to the footpath running from Somers Road to platform two, which has been the subject of confusion over ownership.

The path is in bad repair but until ownership can be established no action can be taken to improve it. The matter is currently resting with the county council.

Ms Gilmore said that the timescale for any plans made would be over the next few years and there was no agreements or timetable from Central Trains as yet.
