WHAT mean and narrow minded comments in Andrew Lewis's letter (Postbag, June 1) regarding his concern about the 'pathetic society' we are 'in danger of becoming' just because many dedicated people have supported the establishment of the Worcestershire Animal Rescue Centre near Malvern.

I would suggest we are in much more danger of becoming a pathetic society if such causes were not supported and humans could not be generous enough to contribute their interest, time and money to a variety of worthy causes, all of which are desperate for help in assisting those who cannot seek it for themselves.

His reference to those 'who have grown up with problems which are not of their making' is particularly true of dogs and other pets which have no influence over the homes in which they end up.

Most of the animals being cared for at the Rescue Centre are there as a result of their owners personal circumstances, such as divorce, children being born, ill health or work commitments and, through no fault of their own, find themselves no longer wanted.
