MALVERN cyclist Vince Savage has returned from Glasgow after cycling there to raise money for charity.

Mr Savage, a scientist at DERA, made the 470-mile trip in aid of Malvern Special Families, where he works as a volunteer on Saturday mornings.

"It went OK, more or less," he said. "I got a flat tyre in the rain and I broke the back wheel in Rochdale, as if being in Rochdale wasn't punishment enough!"

Mr Savage arrived in Glasgow after seven days on the road and was given a traditional welcome.

"I had lots to drink when I got to there," he said. "My mates helped me out all the way, it was a great laugh."

Sponsorship money is still being counted but Mr Savage estimates he has raised around £900.

The Emerald Isle is the next target in Mr Savage's sights.

"I'd love to cycle around Ireland, it looks beautiful," he said. "But I think I might choose a time when the weather's a bit better."
