FUN-loving pupils will revive an age-old tradition to address a 21st Century problem this weekend.
The Abberley Primary School children will give a display of maypole dancing as part of a drive to raise cash for a safer school entrance at their summer fete on Saturday.
The main gate from their playground opens straight on to the busy Clows Top road with nothing to prevent a pupil dashing into danger.
The £6,000 project - which has planning permission - will include a ramp for wheelchairs and buggies opposite the village hall drop-off point and work to improve visibility on both sides of the crossing.
The Parent Teacher Association has already raised half the cash, and headteacher Jenny Taylor hopes Saturday's fete will make a big dent in the rest of the target as maypole dancing returns to the Abberley area for what is believed to be the first time in decades.
"The children have really enjoyed practising," she said. "All we need now is for the sun to shine to put the finishing touch to a really traditional fete."
To add to the traditional feel, the event - which starts in the school grounds at 2pm - includes home-made cakes, tombola, skittles and a lucky dip.
