A SPECTACULAR open-air theatre production coming to Great Witley later this month promises to transport audiences back to Shakespearean Venice.

Acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company actor Barry Stanton, currently appearing in the RSC production of Twelfth Night, will be the star attraction of Heartbreak's version of The Merchant Of Venice at Witley Court.

It will be Heartbreak's 12th open-air production and will get two airings in Great Witley as part of a national tour to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary.

A spokeswoman said: "Heartbreak aims to bring the genius of Shakespeare alive by exploring the passion, fun and pain of human relationships and taking them to their limits.

"The dramatic conflict of love versus money and family loyalty versus filial rebellion will climax in an explosive mixture of romance and intrigue."

The Merchant Of Venice is a romantic comedy set in the buzzing commercial world of Venice, where young gallants, merchants balancing risk against profit and money-lending Jews work together.

It is a feverish environment contrasted by the rural tranquility of Belmont, where Portia resides with her caskets and riddles.

Audience interaction is provided by the comedian of the piece, Launcelot Gobbo - and the play presents audiences with as many questions as answers.

"This is an experience for age sevens upwards plus everyone who loves a happy ending," the spokeswoman said.

"Outstanding original music specially created for this production will highlight the contrasts between the serenity and beauty of Belmont and the driving heat of the Rialto.

"The Heartbreak team will transport you into a Venetian atmosphere with music and sound."

The company was previously presented the likes of Macbeth directed by Donald Sumpter, EastEnders actress Louise Jameson's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Much Ado About Nothing under the baton of James Bolam.

Toilets and parking are available, although prospective audience members are advised to bring their own seats.

Meanwhile, the Theatre Set-up company is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a production of the bard's last complete play, The Tempest at Witley Court tonight.

The Merchant Of Venice will be staged there on Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1 at 7.30pm.
