A COUPLE who saw red after complaints about the colour of the bricks they used for their extension are set to rebuild it - in yellow.

Janine and Steve Hodson tore down part of the £10,000 dining room extension fearing they would lose if they went into battle with Malvern Hills District Council.

The building at their home in Cherry Orchard, Holt Heath, was almost finished when a council officer informed them a complaint had been made about the colour of the red bricks they had used.

Another officer went to see the family earlier this week and advised them to use a yellow brick after considering a selection the couple had obtained.

"I'm amazed that the council have chosen this yellow brick because I would've thought it would be far more noticeable than our original red, considering the house is red brick," said Mrs Hodson, a travel agent.

"But we're doing as we're told and the bricks are coming on Saturday, with the building work starting again soon afterwards.

''If we get a complaint about the yellow bricks I can only say that the council knows all about it."

Mrs Hodson insists the couple, who have two daughters, were not advised what colour bricks to use when planning permission was originally given.

"We've had officers inspecting the extension at various stages with no mention of the colour of the bricks we'd used," she said.

"The house is 35 years old so we went to a builder's merchant to try to get the nearest match.

"I feel very aggrieved by the whole thing, although I've tried to laugh about it. I would like to take it further because I don't feel we can take responsibility for this."

Malvern Hills' area planning officer Brian Glasson confirmed the authority only became involved after a complaint was made about the bricks' colour.

He was unavailable for comment as the Evening News went to press.
