SUPT Simon Adams' response to recent criticisms of the police cites the usual excuse of having insufficient staff (You Say, May 31).

If I had used this excuse in my time in management it would have been an admission of my own inability to meet the remit, regardless of staffing levels.

Our work would be completed by the deadlines, or we lost that custom and quite probably our employment. But publicly-funded bodies have nothing to lose and are always given more money.

Why was it necessary to deploy 60 police officers to greet the return of Ronnie Biggs or locally get three police cars containing possibly six officers to attend a complaint of road obstruction?
