A BID for Government funds to extend Malvern's CCTV system has received support from the town council.

The district council's initiative in applying for Home Office funds was welcomed by the town's management committee, although some members would like to have seen CCTV in Victoria Park, rather than Waitrose car park.

MHDC's corporate director, Kevin Douglas, had asked for written support for his council's plans to extend the existing system in Great Malvern to the Back Lane car park and the new car park behind Belle Vue Terrace. The plans also include five cameras to be installed in Malvern Link and three in Barnards Green if the bid is successful.

"Rather than see CCTV cameras pointing at car parks, I would like to see them pointed at Victoria Park," said Coun Pat Mewton. "These car parks are not going to be used out of hours. It's in Victoria Park where the vandalism is occurring."

Coun Graham Myatt said there were many areas members might like to see covered by CCTV but the district council was asking for support for a specific bid due to be submitted the following day (June 1).
