A QUESTION mark hangs over the future of the Horseshoe Inn at Broom's Green, which has been sold and is now closed.

Following one planning bid to turn it into a house earlier this year, locals fear the Horseshoe will now stay shut, ending 200 years of service to the community.

The pub has been bought by Chris Tweedale, headmaster of Ledbury's John Masefield High School,

Regular Peter Feltham, of Tillers Green, has vowed to oppose any "change of use" planning application for the free house and the Campaign for Real Ale has offered its support and experience to help.

CAMRA's Herefordshire branch chairman Richard Putley said the organisation had successfully fought alongside locals five years ago to oppose a change of use of the Live and Let Live pub, Bringsty Common, and could help in a similar way with the Horseshoe.

The Horseshoe's former owners, Ken and Jackie Thomson, called time for the last time, on Thursday, May 31.

Mrs Thomson said: "I'm not going to say whether or not the Horseshoe will be a pub. It's up to the present owners what they do. But it wasn't really viable."

The Tweedales, of Biddulph Way, Ledbury, declined to comment on their plans.
