AS work continues apace on the first stage of re-roofing St James's Church (luckily in dry weather so far!), another fundraising event has been arranged for Midsummer's Night to help keep the project moving ahead.

St James's School and West Malvern Village have teamed up to present 'Summer Solstice', an evening of music, drama and poetry, with strawberries and wine. It will be held in the Rose Temple in the grounds of St James's School starting at 6.30pm. Tickets (family £5, individual £2) are available in advance from St James's School, The Bees Knees village shop, the Post Office or on the evening. Regrettably your correspondent will be on holiday: any news or notices for the rest of June should reach me by Wednesday next.

Another forthcoming event in the grounds of St James's School will be a repeat of last year's highly successful village fete. To be held on Saturday July 14 from 1pm, it will feature live music, a barbecue, plant and book stalls, tea and cakes, ice creams and drinks. Organiser Tony Poyner (567238) adds intriguingly "...there will also be interesting and unusual artefacts from mysterious and wonderful regions of the world." The mind boggles!

Congratulations to long-time village resident the Rev Douglas Green (Dougie to his friends) who will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the Priesthood this Sunday. Dougie, now living at the Beau-champ Community at Newland, has not been well but is on the mend.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will witness the rare event of two weddings on the same day at St James's Church, between Ian Gallagher and Rebecca Walker, and between Matthew Duffett and Samantha Joyce.

Congratulations also to Roy Brazier, who recently became the chairman of the Fabric and Churchyard Com-mittee at St James's Church, on his recent marriage to Gladys.
