MY continuing charity work with the sick and dying in Bangalore India, has made me more than appreciate our National Health Service, despite its shortcomings.

Having spent four weeks in Maple Ward in Newtown Hospital, I am full of praise for the doctors and nursing staff, the physio and occupational therapist.

Although seriously undermanned, they remained cheerful and amenable at all times. And I remember particularly the kindness of the ambulance men who attended me following my stroke.

If I must grumble about anything, it is the parking fee charged for visitor. No one would mind 20p, but 70p minimum is exorbitant.
