THE Journal edition for this week of 1951 announced that the Hon. John Coventry, a former Mayor and alderman of Worcester, had become a full partner in Tattersall, the horse racing organisation.

"He is the grandson of the 9th Earl of Coventry, owner of the Grand National winners Emblem and Emblematic. Educated at Eton and Oxford, the Honorable John captained Worcestershire CCC for two seasons and was licensed as a judge under National Hunt racing rules in 1932 and under Jockey Club rules in 1937."

Also in 1951, farmers and agricultural workers packed Worcester Cathedral for a special Farm Sunday service. The visiting Canon who gave the sermon stressed: "Nature demands again and again that a ceaseless struggle is to be waged for her pattern of beauty to be accomplished, but that struggle also brings joy to the heart."

However, there was concern in the Worcestershire countryside at the time over the fast diminishing number of blacksmiths. The problem was highlighted at a meeting in Worcester of the county branch of the National Master Farriers and Blacksmiths Association, where members said that fewer and fewer young people were coming into the craft. Recruitment campaigns were considered pressing and vital.

Again in this week of 1951, Commoners held a meeting at Callow End to object strongly against proposals to establish golf courses on the Old Hills.
