SWIMMING: Amy Smith has topped the national rankings for her age group after a fine time in the 50 metres freestyle at the Midland Long Course and Sprint Championships.

Wyre Forest Swimming Club's Smith, who competes as a 14-year-old, qualified for the Ladies Open and the Age Group Championships.

She also took bronze medals in the 50m butterfly and backstroke.

Wyre Forest members have featured well in the championships at Coventry, one of five regional competitions and boasting the largest catchment area.

Qualifying times are fast so club members were up against some of the finest swimmers in Britain.

Another local medalist was Rachel Harrison who gained bronze in the 11 years 50m butterfly and fifth place in the freestyle.

Daniel Baylie came sixth in the final of the 12 years' freestyle and Kevin Wall was eighth in the 12 years' backstroke.

Brett Webster, 17, and Hannah Wear, 13, swam in the Open Competition with the latter also competing in the Age Group Championships and relays.

Others Midland district qualifiers: Iskra Lawrence (11), Fay Trezise (12), Emma Levitt (13), Peter Macbeth (11), Jonathon Baylie (12), Ben Turton (12), Richard Carter (14), Adam Cotgrave (14), James Terry (14), and Matthew Turton (14).

Wyre Forest won the Mercian Summer League second round at Wombourne with 15 first places, 13 seconds and nine thirds out of 50 races.

Final result: Wyre Forest 218, Stratford 196, Triple S 192, Halesowen 166, Wolverhampton 156, Wombourne 120.

A team aged from nine to 13 competed in the Ross Diddy League at Ludlow and finished runners-up after a battle with the hosts.
