YOUNGSTERS who aspire to become firefighters can make their dreams come true.

Droitwich Spa has had its own Young Firefighters' Association (YFA) since January.

Teenagers train under the watchful eye of the town's retired firefighters including David 'Monty' Wilde who served at the Friar Street station for 39 years.

The organisation aims to give youths, aged between 13 and 17, practical and life skills to help them reach their full potential.

The Spa group, which follows the successful launch of a Malvern association, is under the umbrella of Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade.

Membership is free but candidates must pass a tough interview to join.

Organisers plan a busy programme of activities which includes practical and theoretical instruction on fire service subjects, outdoor adventure training, and activities leading to Duke of Edinburgh awards.

The first batch of candidates recently completed their basic training. In May, a passing out parade was held at the town's fire station to mark their success.

Members each received a certificate and a full uniform.

Organisers are already preparing to take on new recruits. Interviews will probably be in September.

The 21 youngsters meet once a week and member Lee Freeman, of Kidderminster, told the Advertiser/Messenger the group has bonded really well.

The 16-year-old said: "There is a very lively atmosphere and we have lots of fun.

"I want to become a firefighter but the YFA is not a back door entrance to the brigade -- it is an opportunity to gain experience."

To boost group funds the keen teens have held successful quiz nights and car washing events

Retired firefighter Roger Burrows, who helps run the group, said: "I think the association broadens the minds of young people and takes them away from activities such as graffiti and vandalism -- often linked with people of that age group.

"I believe being part of the YFA gives members a sense of pride, especially when they represent the brigade at events."

Brigade press officer Alec Mackie said: "We are extremely pleased with the way the youngsters have entered into the spirit of the association.

"They are not just a credit to themselves they are a credit to the brigade.

"We hope to establish similar groups across the county."
