BELBROUGHTON ice hockey star Tobie Merricks is out to give his best shot at England trials in July.

The 13-year-old Hagley Middle School pupil was selected for the country's under-14 trials after impressing for the Midlands at the Midland Conference finals, in May.

Now the Telford Ice Hockey Club youngster travels to Hull for the chance to make the national squad for the first time since starting the sport at the age of eight.

Tobie, who plays right defence, is one of 12 defenders chosen for the week-long trials on June 21, which will be halved for the final squad.

But with twice-weekly training sessions in Telford, Tobie's mum, Sally, is confident he has what it takes to make the team.

She said: "It's his first chance at it but he's so determined to succeed -- he says he is going to get in.

"His aim is to go to college in America and play there when he's 18."
