The proud owner of these gongs -- four golds and two bronze -- is ace athlete Laurie Brookes, who stormed to success in two championships last month.

The 16-year-old took gold in the 4x100 metre relay and long jump, and a bronze in the 400 metres, at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, on Sunday May 20.

Just over a week later the Rigby Hall Special School year 11 pupil produced some spectacular performances in the Sport for All Disability Championships.

Representing Worcestershire Special Olympics, Laurie won bronze in the 200 metres and golds in the relay and the long jump, where she beat her all-time record with a leap of three metres 11cm.

Now Laurie, who has moderate learning difficulties, moves on to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff next month, to represent the West Midlands at the National Special Olympics, held every three years.
