The Quality Hotel will host an open-air production of Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona.
Councillors gave the go-ahead subject to a fire safety risk assessment.
The MDCC Theatre Company will stage the production at the hotel on July 1 after permission from a licensing sub-committee meeting.
Tickets for the production cost £5 or £4 concessions from the hotel or Tourist Information Centre.
