WORCESTER Rugby Club's pack has been further strengthened with the signing of Joe Ross from Bedford Blues.

The New Zealander, who established himself as one of the best hookers in National One last season, comes to Sixways after signing a one-year deal.

Ross, who arrived at Goldington Road midway through the season, is a former Auckland reserve and replaces Italian Andrea Moretti who leaves Worcester after just a year at the club.

Moretti struggled all season with his line-out throws and was blamed for Worcester's costly defeat at Moseley which, ultimately, cost them promotion.

Ross' move comes on the back of new deals for Andrew Lamerton and Chris Hall to give coach John Brain three options for the number two shirt.

The 26-year-old is highly-rated by Worcester's chief executive Geoff Cooke, who believes his signing could be vital if they are to challenge Rotherham for promotion to the Zurich Premiership.

He said: "Joe was reckoned by many at the end of the season to be the best hooker in the division and he comes to us highly recommended.

"He is a very strong player but has a very consistent line-out throw which of course is vital."

Ross has been warned, however, that he will have a fight on his hands to claim that first-team spot.

Cooke added: "He is the third hooker that we have at the club and Joe will simply have to battle for his place because in Andrew and Chris we already have two good players for that position."

In a double swoop yesterday, Worcester also snapped up another outstanding club player when they signed Orrell skipper Chris Bentley.

The 22-year-old lock has been signed with one eye on the future but made a big impact last season despite the Wigan club's relegation to National Two.

Cooke said: "He pretty much held their pack together last season in what was a bad season for the club. He is a very good young player and again gives us more options."
