WORCESTER City have released utility player, Andy Bradley, after a back injury left his fitness in doubt.

The 31-year-old, who signed from Stafford Rangers, sustained the injury at the end of last season.

Boss, John Barton, said it was too big a gamble for the club to retain his services.

"We needed to be convinced of his fitness but we couldn't make a commitment to a player when we were not sure of his fitness," said Barton.

"In addition Andy has started a new job, which will be a further drain on the allocation of his time to meet the requirements at this level of football.

"I spoke to him the other night and as ever he was totally up front. During the middle third of last season he was as consistent as any other player and we thank him for all his contributions."

Meanwhile Barton revealed he was confident City were on the brink of signing defender, Allan Davies, from Burton Albion.

The attacking full-back enjoyed a three-month loan spell with the club last season.

"It is just a question of tying up one or two loose ends but I'm 99 per cent certain he will be here to play the first game of the season," said Barton.

"He needs a good pre-season but I'm sure he can reach the form that he showed in the short spell he was here.

"I think he is the best right full-back in the league. On the face of it, it could be an exciting signing for us.

"He likes to get forward and join the attack and that part of his game was clearly evident during his loan spell.

"In today's age when we are dealing with more mercenary people, his character, personality and attitude are exactly what a manager would be looking for."

Meanwhile, Wolves and Coventry City will be among Worcester's pre-season opponents.

Gordon Strachan's relegated side travel to St George's Lane on Wednesday, July 25, and Wolves visit on Monday, August 6 (both 7.45).

Their other home friendly to date is against Conference side Boston United on Wednesday, August 8 (7.45).

City travel to Atherstone on Saturday, July 28 (3pm) and Sutton Coldfield on Tuesday, July 31 (7.45). They visit Margate for the Dr Martens League Championship match on Saturday, August 11 (3pm).
