PAUL Griffiths tells us (You Say, May 8) of the bodies represented on the West Midlands Constitutional Convention but he fails to tell us who decided that our constitution and governance needed any examination at all.

It could only have been those who want to see the country split and divided. This is their way of getting it introduced and here lies the stealth of their way of operating.

I still maintain the vast majority of people do not wish to see the country divided. Ambivalence at the polls is just what those who would destroy our country would like to see. This is the result of apathy which, in a recent letter, I have said is their trump card.

This allows them to push forward until people say: "It is inevitable, what can we do?"

But it is far from inevitable and they only have to vote. At the moment, this is still a democratic country.

Finally, I would ask why any debate is called for at all? Our constitution, which began at Runneymede, has stood us well for a thousand years. It must not be destroyed.
