When the organised demonstrator telephoned at the last minute to say she was unable to attend the meeting, chairman Marguerite Stokes telephone committee members who brought containers, flowers and foliage for a Ready, Steady flower-arrangement.

The impromptu evening began with Avis Field using a container made with a washing-up liquid bottle, and produced a vertical arrangement with peach-coloured lilies and hosta leaves.

Margaret Cook reminisced about a holiday in Bali with a hand carved figurine, roses, carnations and foliage.

Betty Bickerton inspired members to attempt a planted bowl with or without flowers, and followed this with a modern design of gerberas and echinops in galvanised containers.

The club's own area demonstration Joan Southerton produced two spectacular designs entitled Spring in Abundance.

On Wednesday Richard Twiselton will demonstrate Prelude at the Civic Centre. Call 01299 878987 for tickets or for the coach to Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Tuesday, June 5, 9.30am from Vale Road.
