THE fate of Evesham United was in the hands of planners today as they considered proposals for a new stadium.

Wychavon District Coun-cil planners are weighing up proposals for a switch to land to the west of the town off the Cheltenham Road.

Councillors visited Soli-hull Borough Football Club at the beginning of May to take a look at a modern Dr Martens Lea-gue stadium.

Around 80 letters of objection have been submitted by nearby residents but the club has revised and scaled-down its plans which were rejected last year.

Club chairman Jim Cockerton stressed that the future of Evesham was tied up with the ground move.

"It is what we have been after for 11 years to try and secure the club's fut-ure," he said.

"I have told councillors, and it is not a threat but a fact, that this football club has not got long in its present position because its present ground needs an awful lot of money for repairs."

He added: "The club has just had its best finish in the Doctor Martens West-ern Division since 1992 and we have got to move forward.

"We are offering facilities for the whole town not just the club."
